Pilates for Bone Strength
Service Description
This class combines the principles of Pilates with targeted resistance training to safely stimulate bone, strengthen muscle, and improve movement quality. We focus on: Progressive, appropriate load to support bone density Spinal alignment and support Strength through controlled ranges Balance, coordination, and reaction Breath and nervous system regulation Some traditional movements—particularly deep spinal flexion, loaded forward bending, or excessive twisting—may not be appropriate in the early stages of osteoporosis. This isn’t about avoiding movement. It’s about choosing the right movement. What’s actually happening in your body Bone is living, metabolically active tissue. It is constantly being broken down and rebuilt through remodelling. At any moment, your body is: Resorbing old or damaged bone Forming new bone Adapting to the forces placed upon it This is why bone responds directly to: Load – strength training and weight-bearing movement Hormones – especially oestrogen and stress responses Nutrition – protein, calcium, vitamin D and K2 Nervous system state – recovery vs chronic stress Your bones are always listening to how you move. They don’t get stronger from being protected — they get stronger from being used well. Why osteoporosis affects life expectancy Osteoporosis itself doesn’t directly shorten life. The issue is what follows from it. Fractures, particularly hip fractures, are associated with reduced independence and increased complication risk Reduced mobility can lead to muscle loss, cardiovascular decline, and poorer overall health Fear of movement often leads to inactivity, which accelerates decline Spinal fractures can affect breathing mechanics, posture, and organ function over time In short, it’s not the diagnosis—it’s the loss of strength, movement, and resilience that follows if nothing changes. Osteoporosis doesn’t mean stop. It means be specific. And not all Pilates is the same.
