Discover the transformative power of aerial yoga—a dynamic fusion of traditional yoga postures and aerial acrobatics that transcends the ordinary. At ENERGYBODi Sensation Studio, we delve into the scientifically-proven benefits of this practice, in particular we look at the benefits ( and the contraindications) of Inversions.
One of the major benefits of Aerial Yoga are inversions, but how are inversions healthy or not healthy for you?
There are three major systems in the body that the practice of inversions is said to positively influence: cardiovascular, lymphatic and nervous system.
Cardiovascular System
The circulatory system is comprised of the heart, the lungs, and the entire system of vessels that feed oxygen and collect carbon dioxide and other waste products from the cells. Arteries fan out in an intricate tributary system from the heart, which pumps freshly oxygenated blood from the lungs outward. Veins return blood to the heart, and, unlike arteries, make up a low-pressure system that depends on muscular movement or gravity to move blood along. One-way valves at regular intervals prevent backwash and keep fluids moving towards the heart in a system known as “venous return.” Turning yourself upside down encourages venous return.
According to Pat Layton, physiology teacher for the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco’s Advanced Studies Program,''People have to do aerobics because they don’t invert. You have to run really hard—get the heart pumping hard—to circulate blood down to the feet and up the back] we are definately not saying you shouldn’t do aerobics but [inversions are an alternative way to get the benefits to the circulatory system particularly as we get older.''
Lymphatic Liberation
Forget about detox teas and juice cleanses—say hello to aerial inversions! These upside-down adventures aren't just for thrill-seekers or those instagram shots. When you invert, tissue fluids of the lower extremities drain far more effectively than when you are asleep. According to David Coulter, Ph.D., who taught anatomy at the University of Minnesota, areas of congestion clear, and if you can remain inverted for just 3 to 5 minutes, blood will drain quickly to the heart, and tissue fluids will flow more efficiently into the veins and lymph channels of the lower extremities and the abdominal and pelvic organs. This process facilitates a healthier exchange of nutrients and wastes between cells and capillaries. Feel the gentle flush of toxins as you hang loose, boosting your immune system and leaving you feeling lighter than air.
Neural Muscular Marvels
Ready to give your brain a workout? By stimulating your vestibular system, you'll fire up neural connections you didn't even know you had. Inversions challenge your body's spatial awareness, you'll unlock a whole new level of balance, coordination. Inversions can sometimes take people by surprise and their normal proprioception and simply left from right can get a bit confusing. Even upright Yoga poses with a hammock, can throw people off balance due to the change in the centre of Gravity. With the hammock altering the center of gravity, there is a change in core engagement to maintain stability.
And there is so much more to Aerial Yoga.
Fitness Fusion
Looking to shake up your fitness routine? Look no further than aerial yoga! It's not just a workout—it's a cross-training extravaganza! Strengthen muscles you never knew you had, improve flexibility you never thought possible, and unleash your inner acrobat in the process. Its all about cross training. Whether you already are a Yogi or a cyclist, a runner, martial artist or dance aerobics, it is always good to mix and match shift up your fitness.
Myofascial Magic
Meet your new best friend: the aerial hammock. It's not just for lounging—it's a myofascial magician! The word "myofascial" comes from the Greek word "mys" meaning "muscle." When combined with "fascial," which pertains to the fascia.
Fascia is a mix of collagen and elastin fibers that make it super-flexible – able to bend, stretch, flex, extend, and contract as our bodies and lives demand. It also withstands impact, bouncing back from physical and emotional bumps in the road and collisions like the shock absorber on your car. And it isn’t just dead tissue either. It’s a living, breathing (well, almost) and sensitive “thing” with immune cells, a circulatory system, and nerves – sending messages to and from the brain.
Without it, you’d be nothing, literally – just a bag of flesh and bones – unable to walk, talk, work, or play sports. But in all seriousness, when your fascia is supple and healthy, hydrated, and unrestricted – your body, mind, and nervous system are healthy too. Many Aerial moves will cause the hammock to press deeply into our tissues. Sometimes this can feel a tender or sore. Initially you may only be able to be in these positions for a few seconds or a minute. But it is surprising how quickly this can change with weekly practice, it can turn into a deep release that feels really good. Aerial Yoga reaches body parts you never knew you had ! Your muscles will thank you as they unravel, leaving you feeling loose, limber, and ready to take on the world.

Therapeutic Transformation
Need a little TLC? Aerial yoga has your back—literally! While Yoga inversions such as Headstand and Shoulderstand can place tremendous compressive force on the upper spine, causing potential nerve irritation and compression to the brachial plexus, aerial yoga offers a decompressive alternative.
The hammock gently supports your body, allowing for a safe and effective inversion that can help alleviate spinal pressure.
However, if you have a back problem, please speak personally to our instructors. You may be better off with a one-to-one session or joining one of ENERGYBODi's specialist Back Care or Pilates sessions.
Please note - inversions are not recommended for certain health conditions, these include glaucoma, cataracts, detacted retina, recent botox treatment, high or low blood pressure, sinitus, vertigo.
So there you have it, fellow adventurers: the secrets of aerial yoga await! Strap on your wings (okay, your hammock), spread your wings, and get ready to soar. It's time to fly high, dream big, and unleash your inner aerial warrior.
With uplifting vibes,The ENERGBODi Sensation Team
