Why Aerial Yoga?
Aerial Yoga uses a silk hammock to support and elevate you, literally and figuratively and here are just a few of the benefits:
- Enhanced Flexibility and Strength: The hammock allows for deeper stretches and supports you in challenging poses, building both flexibility and muscle strength.
- Spinal Decompression: Hanging upside down helps decompress the spine, relieving pressure and promoting better alignment.
- Improved Balance and Coordination: Navigating poses in the hammock enhances your balance and coordination, vital skills both on and off the mat.
- Stress Relief: The unique combination of movement and suspension provides a calming effect, reducing stress and promoting mental clarity.
You can be fully supported by the silks—even lying down entirely, like in a hammock—or wrap the silks around particular body parts, keeping other parts on the floor. Hanging fully or suspending individual body parts is believed to create traction and open your body more gently and intuitively than when you’re on the floor. The silks and ropes can also be helpful for balance. While many aerial yoga classes have an acrobatic element, a growing number of classes and teachers are also using the aerial silks much more therapeutically.
Heather Parsons, owner of The ENERGYBODi Sensation, a Rossendale-based studio offering a wide range of somatic classes, is a huge proponent of using the aerial silks in a more therapeutic way. As she says, “The versatility and support of the fabric allow people to access new movements. It can also reduce the load on wrists and knees, which can sometimes limit mobility in a floor-based practice.”
The practice of yoga with props is largely credited to B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014), who developed the Iyengar type of yoga. In addition to using the blocks, straps, blankets, and rope walls you may see at many studios, Iyengar would hang his students from the ceiling in yoga swings. The original swings were not like the colorful silk hammocks we see today. They were often made solely of ropes and would be padded with yoga mats or blankets.
The ENERGYBODi Ethos
At The ENERGYBODi Sensation, we believe fitness is more than just a workout; it’s an experience. Our sessions are designed to foster a sense of community, build self-confidence, and teach you the vital skill of knowing when to hold on and when to let go—both in the hammock and in life.
Meet Your Instructor
Our Aerial Yoga sessions are led by the talented Jess Goggins. With a playful and uplifting approach, Jess encourages you not to take life or yourself too seriously. Trained in Mental Health Nursing and running her own company, High Level Roofing, Jess knows a thing or two about heights and the mental fortitude required to face them. While you will not be at great heights in these sessions, even a few feet can feel a long way when upside down! Her sessions are as fun as they are challenging, ensuring you leave with a smile on your face and a sense of accomplishment in your heart.
