The Art, Science and Craft of the Gluteus Medius


The hip is one of the body’s great design wonders. It must carry weight, permit stride, absorb force, turn the torso, steady the pelvis and still feel, in a good body, almost effortless.


It requires the sensing of the rotation aspect of the hip in relation to he pelvis in relation to the balance of the vertical spine. Long gone are the days when we talk about muscles having an origin and insertion. This is language for simplified movement, when we compared ourselves to a man made machine of the past. The Gluteus Medius gathers the hip, buttock, outer pelvis, upper thigh and lower back into one powerful region. In that word, the body becomes less mechanical and more architectural.


Ive been guiding a move in sessions recently which I describe as the discus thrower and made reference to a sculpture.

Thank you to Helen for sending me a photo of the sculpture of Myron’s Discobolus, the Discus Thrower. Doesn’t it look amazing. The sculpture became the perfect starting point for looking again at the gluteus medius, not as a small side note in anatomy, but as one of the quiet makers of balance, rotation and grace.

ART


The original Discobolus was created by the Greek sculptor Myron in the 5th century BCE. The original bronze sculpture has been lost, but several Roman marble copies survive.

What makes the sculpture so fascinating isn’t simply the athlete’s musculature.

It is the movement caught inside the stillness.

The athlete is twisted through the feet, legs, pelvis, spine and shoulders. His weight is organised through the ground. One side of the body is shortening while another is lengthening. The pelvis is rotating, the spine is responding and the shoulders are preparing to continue the movement.

Everything is storing energy for the moment the discus leaves his hand.

Look closely and you can see exactly why movement is never really about one isolated muscle.

The whole body is organising itself around the task.


That is the brilliance of the sculpture. It shows potential.


The hip as a turning place


Look at the Discus Thrower from the side and the hip becomes a crossing point. The upper body rotates one way. The pelvis answers. The legs hold the ground. Nothing is loose, yet nothing feels locked.


The gluteus medius sits in this region like a quiet craftsman. It does not have the famous bulk of the gluteus maximus. It does not dominate the silhouette in the same obvious way. Yet without it, the pelvis loses its poise.

SCIENCE

The gluteus medius is a broad, fan-shaped muscle on the outer side of your hip.

It starts on the outside of the pelvis and runs down to attach to the top of the thigh bone.


Improper hip motion is often times a culprit to low back pain and knee pain. Interestingly, the area where we experience pain is regularly not the source of pain. When the glute medius and glute minimus become problematic they can refer pain into the hip down the leg (mimicking a disc herniation), and to the SI joint. 


Walking looks symmetrical, but it is a repeated act of controlled imbalance. With each step, one foot leaves the floor. For a short moment, the body stands on one leg. The pelvis wants to drop on the unsupported side. The gluteus medius on the standing leg responds, holding the pelvis steady enough for the opposite leg to swing through.


A small muscle failure here changes the whole drawing of the body.


The hip may shift. The trunk may lean. The knee may drift inward. The foot may compensate. A movement issue that appears in the knee, ankle or lower back can begin with poor control around the pelvis.


This is why the gluteus medius rarely works alone. It belongs to a wider system: deep hip rotators, abdominal wall, adductors, gluteus maximus, pelvic floor, spine and feet, big toe. Together they decide how force passes through the body.

What happens when it does not join in


When the gluteus medius lacks strength, timing or awareness, the body often finds another route.


Some common patterns include:


  • a hip that hikes or drops during walking

  • a standing leg that wobbles during single-leg tasks

  • a knee that collapses inward during squats, stairs or landing

  • a lower back that works too hard to hold the pelvis

  • a stride that feels narrow, heavy or uncertain


None of these signs proves one exact cause. Bodies are more interesting than that. Pain and movement are influenced by tissue capacity, habit, fatigue, injury history, sport, work, stress and confidence.

CRAFT


Craft begins when knowledge becomes practice.


The body learns best when it can feel, adjust and repeat with attention. This is where the work becomes less like a workout and more like studio practice.


A sculptor does not attack marble. A good mover need not attack the hip.


Find the side of the hip


Start with touch.


Place one hand on the outer pelvis, just below the crest of the hip bone. Shift weight gently from both feet onto one foot. Feel the tissue under the hand change as the pelvis steadies.


Now balance on One leg.

A muscle can be working extremely hard while apparently nothing is moving.


This is a useful first lesson. The muscle is not abstract. It is there, under the palm, responding to load.


Try a slow weight shift:


  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart.

  2. Let the knees stay soft.

  3. now lift one leg

  4. Notice the outer hip of the standing leg- does your hip dip?

  5. Practice- hip drops and hip hikes

  6. Return to centre and repeat other leg


This is small work, but it can be revealing. If the shift turns into a collapse, the body has shown you something. If the ribs tip or the lower back grips, that matters too.


Build a line from foot/ big toe, knee to hip.


The gluteus medius depends on the foot more than many people expect.


A foot that cannot sense the ground gives the hip poor information. A pelvis that cannot organise over the foot asks the knee or back to add extra effort.


Try this bare-foot :


  • Stand in a small split stance with all weight on front leg ( discus thrower style)

  • Spread the toes on front foot without clawing them.

  • Let the tripod of the foot meet the floor: focus on base of big toe, and keep all toes and heel on the ground.

  • Bend front knee while sitting back slightly.

  • Go slow,Rotate around the front hip

  • Come to standing with more speed.

  • Repeat



The exercise looks plain. It is not plain. It teaches you to slow down, sense , feel for detail.


For more challenge, turn the head slowly or reach one arm forward or lift the front heel an inch off the floor. The pelvis will need to make new decisions. Let those decisions stay refined.

As we were trying to find and discover this area, someone explained , its your haunches! Well indeed it is. Thank you for the accurate location.  Foam rolling this area of your hips can have a huge impact on improving the overall neurological activity between the brain and these muscles, allowing you to better access their potentials.


If you palpate or foam roll in these areas and do not feel tightness, ropiness, or your specific referral pain, then this might not be the right area for you to foam roll; nothing lost if nothing gained. The tissue quality surrounding your hip can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. Literally, I have known people whose sleep benefited by foam rolling the hip.


Discovering the Gluteus Medius and learning how to switch it on, make it strong by discovering its full range of movement is a game changer in pain free hips, low back and knees and can bring more power to your walk , run and more stability to your balance , squats and sport.
